News and Press Releases Faith Leaders to Focus on Gun Violence, Suicide at Forum (April 24, 2006)
The Indiana Partnership to Prevent Violent Injury and Death, in conjunction with
Clarian Health, Riley Hospital for Children, the Christian Theological Seminary and
NAMI Indianapolis (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) will hold a conference on
Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at the Christian Theological Seminary, 1000 W. 42nd Street
from 8:30 am -3:15 pm. The mental health education conference is entitled “Mending
the Mind and Minding the Soul".

A collaboration of grassroots organizations dedicated
to preventing gun violence held an online auction event: "Come Together
to Free America from Gun Violence" as a tribute to the life and legacy of John Lennon and to honor the over
30,000 Americans killed each year with guns. We thank all those who
supported this fundraiser by either contributing items or by placing
bids. The auction brought in over $15,000.

David Hemenway, PhD, Professor of Health Policy, Harvard University,
presented the keynote address entitled “Private Guns: Public Health” at this year's
Annual Meeting, which was generously sponsored by
Clarian Health Partners.
For the first year, the Partnership incorporated an award luncheon into the event.
The past chief of the Indianapolis Department, Jerry Barker was honored for his long
and continuing career and accomplishments in violence reduction in Indianapolis.

The Indiana Partnership to Prevent Violent Injury and Death at
Riley Hospital for
Children in conjunction with Wishard Health Services will sponsor the fifth annual
National Ask Day with a tree planting ceremony in memory of children affected by gun
violence at the Broad Ripple High School, 1115 Broad Ripple Ave. on Tuesday, June 21
at 1:00 pm.

In an effort to reduce suicides and firearm related deaths, the Indiana Partnership to Prevent
Violent Injury and Death, in conjunction with Riley Hospital for Children, the Christian
Theological Seminary and NAMI Indianapolis (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) will
present a roundtable discussion on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at Christian Theological Seminary,
1000 W. 42nd Street from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm.

In April, a collaborative arrangement was finalized with the IU School of Law
- Indpls, Hall Center for Law and Health, which should prove to have both programmatic and
financial benefits. The Hall Center for Law and Health will gain access to the
data surveillance system that the Partnership has successfully implemented,
while the Partnership will broaden their scope in terms of policy analysis
and legal impact studies.

In an effort to reduce suicides and firearm related deaths, the Indiana Partnership
to Prevent Firearm Violence in conjunction with Clarian Health and NAMI Indianapolis
(National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) will hold a conference on Tuesday,
October 5, 2004 at North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian Street from
8:30 am – 3:30 pm. The conference is entitled “Understanding, Preventing and
Responding to Firearm Violence and Suicide: How the Faith Community Can Make
A Difference.”

471 people in Marion County sustained gunshot injuries and 151 (32%) of
them died. Such deaths increased from 145 in 2002. In the 287 cases where
the firearm type was identified, 88% were listed as handguns.

Indianapolis Police Department in conjunction with Clarian Health and RTV6 will host a gun
buyback on Saturday, August 28 at the Julia Carson Government Center, 300 East Fall Creek
Parkway from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

University Center for
Survey Research, based in Bloomington, Indiana. Gun ownership shows a
slight decline since 2000. There is increased support for laws regulating

The Indiana Partnership to Prevent Firearm Violence announced today the U. S.
Surgeon General’s report on suicide highlights the need to intensify efforts to heighten the
public’s awareness about the risk factors linked to suicide, and reduce the stigma associated

Research in cooperation with the Indiana Partnership to Prevent Firearm Violence
