Education

Faith-Based Education Initiative

The Partnership is in the second year of a two-year Spiritual Health grant awarded by Clarian Health Partners. The purpose of the project is to educate faith leaders about firearm violence and suicide in Marion County and to provide resources that help them better determine who is at risk and how to intervene with those at risk for injury. The Partnership has also collaborated with key agencies such as Indianapolis Police Department, Christian Theological Seminary, and NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Indianapolis to host educational meetings and roundtable discussions for faith leaders on these topics.

Initial findings of the pilot program indicate that faith leaders are receptive to learning more about the topics of suicide and firearm injury prevention. The program helped empower faith leaders to recognize and intervene with those at risk for suicide or firearm injury and refer them for appropriate community interventions, if necessary.

The project has received favorable national attention. Abstracts were accepted for presentation at three national meetings including an oral presentation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Spring Meeting in May 2005, a poster presentation at the American Public Health Association Fall Meeting in Philadelphia in December 2005, and and oral presentation at the American Association of Suicidology Annual Meeting in Seattle in April 2006.

ASK Day Media Event

The Partnership collaborated with Wishard Hospital on this year’s ASK day media event which took place on June 21st. ASK Day is a national media campaign that reminds parents of the importance of “asking if there are guns where their children spend time.” The ASK campaign is sponsored by PAX and medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This year’s ASK day featured a tree planting and dedication at an area high school which lost four students to gun violence in an 18 month period. The principal of the high school, family of victims, and a trauma surgeon spoke at the ceremony. Press coverage of the event reminded the public about the importance of safe storage of guns.

Sixth Annual Meeting

The Partnership's sixth annual meeting, sponsored by Clarian Health, took place on October 20, 2005. David Hemenway from Harvard delivered the keynote address which focused on scientific and common sense measures for reducing gun violence. Other speakers includeed Indiana Representative David Orentlicher and Thomas Mannard from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

The Partnership was proud to award Major Jerry Barker, Indianapolis Police Department, with the “Excellence in Violence Prevention Award” sponsored by Clarian Health Partners.

Pediatric Resident Education

The Partnership continues to educate Pediatric residents at the Indiana University School of Medicine on firearm injury prevention through monthly lectures that are incorporated into their medical curriculum. The focus is to educate residents about the statistics related to firearm violence and provide resources that they can use to counsel their patients and families about firearm violence prevention.
